Scanning

Types of Scanners

In order to get the best results from scanning, all artwork should have a flat surface.  Any distortions in the surface could be highlighted / enhanced during scanning.  It is always advisable to scan from the original artwork where possible, and to capture the picture with as high a resolution as your equipment will allow. This will improve the quality of the final print.

Should your piece of artwork be too big to fit on your scanner, you do have other options available:

  • You can take your artwork to a print bureau or photographic lab who will be able to digitise your artwork for you. Your image can them be stored on a CD.

  • If your image is textural or sculptural you would be advised to get this photographed professionally and supplied to you on transparency, or alternatively get it scanned with a scanback (click here to see the different types of scanners)

  • The other important thing to understand about scanning is the resolution of the scanned image.  The higher the resolution of a scanned image the more information is held.
